[Asia Economy Reporter Osuyeon] Samsung Electronics will unveil the most anticipated flagship of the first half of the year, the Galaxy S23 series, on February 2nd. It is expected to generate excitement as its performance is reported to have significantly improved compared to its predecessor, including the adoption of a record-breaking 200-megapixel camera.
On the 15th, Samsung Electronics announced that it will hold 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2023' in San Francisco, USA, on February 1st (local time).
The Galaxy S23 series to be unveiled this time includes the ▲Standard (6.1-inch) ▲Plus (6.6-inch) ▲Ultra (6.8-inch) models.
Based on information revealed through foreign media, IT tipsters, and the industry, the most notable change in the Galaxy S23 series is the camera. The top-tier model’s camera, which was 108 million pixels from the Galaxy S20 through the previous generation, is said to have been upgraded to 200 million pixels. Additionally, it is predicted to feature a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 10-megapixel folded zoom, 10-megapixel telephoto on the rear, and a 12-megapixel front camera.
The standard model is reported to have a rear main camera of 50 million pixels, a 12-megapixel telephoto, an 11-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 10-megapixel front camera. The Plus model shares the same rear main 50 million pixels, 12-megapixel telephoto, and 11-megapixel ultra-wide as the standard model, but the front camera is 12 megapixels, the same as the Ultra.
The night special shooting feature 'Nightography,' introduced in the previous model, is also expected to be enhanced.
Photos of the product leaked by multiple IT tipsters show that the rear camera design has also changed. In the previous generation, the droplet camera design was applied only to the Ultra, the top-tier model. The standard and Plus models adopted a contour cut design, commonly called 'katuktu' (camera bump). In this series, the droplet camera design is expanded to all models. The Unpacked invitation hints at this change, showing three circles made of green light reminiscent of the droplet camera.
Judging from the invitation, the main color is Botanic Green. In addition, Phantom Black, Cotton Flower, and Misty Lilac colors have been confirmed through leaked photos.
The application processor (AP), which acts as the brain of the smartphone, is likely to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 AP for all three models. In the previous generation, Samsung alternated between its own AP 'Exynos' and Qualcomm. The central processing unit (CPU) is expected to improve performance by up to 40%, and the graphics processing unit (GPU) by 25%.
IT specialized media GSM Arena reported, citing tipsters, that the Galaxy S23 standard and Plus models will have 8GB RAM with 256GB internal storage, while the Ultra will come with 12GB RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB internal storage options.
The display is expected to use the same 1750-nit brightness active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) as applied in the previous Galaxy S22 Ultra. IT specialized media SamMobile recently reported that Samsung did not adopt the 2000-nit brightness display unveiled at CES 2023.
Battery capacity has also increased. The standard model is expected to have 3900mAh, the Plus 4700mAh, which is 200mAh more than the previous generation. The Ultra is reported to have the same 5000mAh as before.
There is also mention of the possibility that the emergency communication function using satellite communication, which attracted attention when installed on the iPhone, will be included in the Ultra.
Samsung Electronics is expected to attempt a turnaround with the Galaxy S23 series. The previous Galaxy S22 series was popular at launch but faced consumer backlash due to the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) issue, compounded by the economic downturn.
Counterpoint Research reported that Samsung Electronics’ smartphone shipments in the third quarter of last year decreased by 6% compared to the same period the previous year, and the average selling price (ASP) increased by only 2%, resulting in a 4% decrease in revenue compared to the previous year.
