Seoul City Operates 'Visible Fire Extinguisher' Citizen Volunteer Group
Local Volunteers Conduct Visible Fire Extinguisher Inspection and Maintenance
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Seoul Metropolitan Fire and Disaster Headquarters announced on the 12th that it will collaborate with the Seoul Volunteer Center to inspect and manage the ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ through local volunteers.
‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ refer to fire extinguishers installed in areas where fire trucks have difficulty passing or entering, such as densely populated residential areas, allowing local residents to initially extinguish fires in case of an outbreak.
Seoul was the first city in the nation to introduce ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers,’ which have been regularly inspected and maintained by on-site response teams and volunteer firefighters since their installation.
Recently, as complaints from citizens about the aging of the initially installed ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ have increased, concerns have also grown regarding the burden on on-site response teams to manage the extinguisher boxes and the potential for response gaps.
Accordingly, the Fire and Disaster Headquarters signed a business agreement with the Seoul Volunteer Center to operate a ‘Citizen Volunteer Group’ composed of volunteers to enable more efficient management of the ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ and reduce the workload of on-site response teams.
Through this, a system will be established where local residents can directly inspect and manage the ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ for fire safety in their neighborhoods.
To ensure the smooth operation of the ‘Citizen Volunteer Group,’ the Fire and Disaster Headquarters attached QR codes to the visible fire extinguisher boxes so volunteers can immediately input inspection results, and registered the locations of the ‘Visible Fire Extinguishers’ on the ‘Seoul Safety’ app for mobile access.
Civilians wishing to become ‘Visible Fire Extinguisher Safety Keepers’ can sign up on the ‘1365 Volunteer Portal,’ search for ‘Visible Fire Extinguisher’ in the integrated search, and apply. Anyone can apply and participate in volunteering after simple training.
The hours volunteered are systematically managed on the ‘1365 Volunteer Portal’ site, and participants can enjoy various local benefits.
