Musical 'Frida' Nominated for 7 Categories at the Korean Musical Awards
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] The musical ‘Frida: The Last Night Show’ has been nominated for seven categories at the 7th Korean Musical Awards.
Now in its 7th year, the Korean Musical Awards selects and honors outstanding works across a total of eighteen categories. This year, the awards consider works that have held more than 14 paid performances from December 1, 2021, to December 4 of last year. The final decisions are made through evaluations by a panel of 100 experts and 200 audience voters.
The musical ‘Frida’ has been nominated in seven categories including the ‘Korean Musical Awards Grand Prize,’ ‘Best Work_under 400 seats,’ ‘Best Leading Actress’ (Kim Sohyang), ‘Best Direction’ (Choo Jeonghwa), ‘Best Script’ (Choo Jeonghwa), ‘Best Music_Composition’ (Heo Suhyun), and ‘Best Choreography’ (Kim Byungjin).
‘Frida’ is EMK Musical Company’s (hereafter EMK) first small theater original musical. It unfolds the last days of the passionate artist Frida Kahlo, who boldly confronted darkness, in a frame narrative format. Through Frida Kahlo’s message "VIVA LA VIDA! (Long live life)," it conveys the joy of life and healing she found amidst suffering. Since its premiere on March 1 last year, it has recorded an audience rating of 9.7 on Interpark Ticket and achieved sold-out performances for every show until its closing on May 29.
The production featured outstanding performances by actors representing Korean musicals, including Choi Jungwon, Kim Sohyang, Jeon Sumi, Lisa, Lim Jeonghee, Jung Youngah, Choi Seoyeon, Heo Hyejin, and Hwang Woolim. Despite the pain that weighed down life, it received high praise for elegantly conveying the story of ‘Frida,’ who lived a life full of joy. Unusually for a Korean small theater original premiere, it was performed not only in Seoul but also in Busan and Gangneung.
