[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] Inje University Ilsan Paik Hospital announced on the 3rd that it has established a 'Head and Neck Cancer Center.'
Head and neck cancer is a collective term for cancers occurring in the head and neck, including oral cancer, pharyngeal cancer (tonsil cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, etc.), laryngeal cancer, salivary gland cancer, thyroid cancer, and metastatic cervical lymph node cancer.
The Head and Neck Cancer Center at Ilsan Paik Hospital has built a multidisciplinary treatment system with Professors Jo Jae-geun and So Yoon-kyung from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Professor Kim Hye-sook from the Department of Hematology and Oncology, Professor Kang Seung-hee from the Department of Radiation Oncology, and Professor Kwon Hye-ryeong from the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
Each specialist provides optimized personalized treatment to patients by analyzing ▲ cancer staging ▲ overall health status of the patient ▲ possible post-treatment sequelae ▲ functional and cosmetic issues through multidisciplinary integrated care. According to the treatment plan, surgery is handled by the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are managed by the Departments of Hematology and Oncology and Radiation Oncology, respectively.
In particular, preserving the functions of speaking and swallowing is important in head and neck cancer. At the Head and Neck Cancer Center of Ilsan Paik Hospital, conservative surgical methods and reconstructive surgery for function preservation are performed. For patients with advanced head and neck cancer, concurrent chemoradiotherapy and immunotherapy using immune checkpoint inhibitors are also provided. Additionally, a 'Voice Clinic' is operated to identify the causes of voice changes during cancer treatment and to help restore the voice.
