Domestic Game Industry Revenue Surpasses 20 Trillion Won... 4th Largest Worldwide

China Declines in Export Share While Southeast Asia and Europe Rise
Domestic game industry revenue surpassed 20 trillion won for the first time. According to the '2022 Korea Game White Paper' published on the 2nd by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency, the 2021 revenue was 20.9913 trillion won, an 11.2% increase from the previous year. It accounted for 7.6% of the global game industry ($219.758 billion). It is the fourth largest market after the United States (22.0%), China (20.4%), and Japan (10.3%). In particular, the PC game market share was 13.2%, ranking third after China and the United States.
Of the total game industry revenue, 57.9% (12.1483 trillion won) came from mobile games. PC games accounted for 26.8% (5.6373 trillion won), console games 5.0% (1.052 trillion won), and arcade games 1.3% (273.3 billion won). Except for console games (-3.7%), all sectors showed growth rates of over 10% compared to the previous year. PC games grew by 15.0%, mobile games by 12.2%, and arcade games by 20.3%. The Korea Creative Content Agency stated, "With efforts such as platform expansion and genre diversification, the domestic game market size is expected to reach 22.7 trillion won last year."

Exports in 2021 increased by 5.8% from the previous year to $8.67287 billion (approximately 9.9254 trillion won). The shares were highest in China (34.1%), Southeast Asia (17.0%), North America (12.6%), Europe (12.6%), and Japan (10.5%). The Korea Creative Content Agency explained, "While China's export share slightly decreased, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America increased." Imports rose 15.3% to $312.33 million (approximately 357.4 billion won), the highest recorded in the past seven years. During the same period, the number of workers in related industries was 81,856. Of these, 55.3% (45,262) were in production and distribution, and the remaining 44.7% (36,594) were in sales.
