Cold and Dry Winter... Enjoying Tea Instead of Water
Rising Popularity of Mate Tea Boosts Attention for 'Taeyang-ui Matecha' and More
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] As freezing temperatures continue day after day, tea is gaining popularity. During the dry winter season, consumers are increasingly purchasing various teas that can be consumed instead of water to relax both the stiff body and mind.
Recently, the tea culture trend has been led by the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z). In the past, tea was perceived as a traditional culture or a culture of middle-aged and older generations, but recently, centered on young people, the ‘Wellness’ trend has spread, and tea is regarded as a means of healing. In particular, interest in tea is expected to continue domestically as well, as it was spotlighted again last month when it was reported that Argentine players enjoyed drinking mate tea during the FIFA Qatar World Cup.
Mate tea, nicknamed the national beverage of South America, is highly popular worldwide, ranking as one of the top three teas alongside coffee and green tea. In Korea, it can be conveniently enjoyed as ‘Taeyang’s Mate Tea.’ Coca-Cola’s tea beverage ‘Taeyang’s Mate Tea’ was first introduced in Korea in 2013 and has been steadily loved by consumers for its clean taste and zero calories. The product is brewed directly from Brazilian mate leaves, also called the ‘green tea of South America,’ allowing consumers to enjoy Latin-style mate tea with a clean taste and aroma. Additionally, its zero-calorie content makes it light and easy to drink without burden in daily life.
There are also products that allow you to fully enjoy the savory flavor of grains. Last summer, Coca-Cola introduced two types of tea products, ‘Taeyang’s Original Tea Kettle Tea (hereafter ‘Kettle Tea’)’ made from domestically grown barley and corn brewed in water boiled at 130 degrees Celsius, offering a savory and deep flavor. ‘Kettle Tea’ is characterized by enhancing the savory taste of barley tea and corn tea as if served in a kettle. The focus was on replicating the taste of barley tea and corn tea carefully brewed in a large kettle at home. The two types of ‘Kettle Tea’ are available in 500mL PET bottles and can be found through various sales channels such as convenience stores, supermarkets, and online malls.
