"Buy Less, Buy Better" Fashion Icon Vivian Westwood Passes Away
Widely Known as the Pioneer of Punk Rock Fashion
British fashion icon Vivian Westwood passed away on the 29th (local time) at the age of 81.
The Vivian Westwood fashion house announced through its official social media (SNS) on the same day, "Vivian Westwood peacefully passed away today at her home in South London, surrounded by her family."
They added, "The world needs people like Westwood to create a better future."
Born in the UK on April 8, 1941, Westwood is widely recognized as a pioneer of punk rock fashion. She gained great fame after opening a shop selling vintage clothing and more in London in 1971, and later worked as a fashion designer, earning the title of the queen of British fashion.
Vivian Westwood was honored as 'British Designer of the Year' in 1990 and 1991. She also received medals from Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 and 2006 in recognition of her contributions.
In the 2000s, she became interested in environmental issues. In 2015, she even drove a tank to protest in front of then-Prime Minister David Cameron’s residence. During her lifetime, she emphasized eco-friendly fashion by saying, "Choose (clothes) well. Buy less."
