Yoon's Security Moves After North Korean Drone Intrusion... "Harsh Consequences for Provocations" (Comprehensive)
Visit to the Agency for Defense Development, Weapon System Inspection
President Yoon "Comprehensive Review of Power Enhancement Plan"
Request for Overwhelmingly Superior War Preparedness
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] On the 29th, President Yoon Suk-yeol inspected the development of our military's surveillance, reconnaissance, and interception systems to counter North Korea's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats, emphasizing once again that "provocations must be met with severe consequences."
President Yoon visited the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, stating, "The airspace intrusion by North Korean UAVs is an absolutely unacceptable incident," according to Lee Jae-myung, deputy spokesperson of the presidential office.
ADD is a national research institute under the Ministry of National Defense responsible for technical investigation, research, development, and testing of weapons and defense science technologies necessary for national defense, employing approximately 3,500 personnel. It conducts research, development, and performance testing of weapon systems and related technologies required for defense, reviews, analyzes, and supports military weapon systems and related technologies, and also carries out civilian-military technology cooperation projects and supports testing and evaluation of civilian equipment.
This visit came just one day after President Yoon criticized the military for its practical failure to respond to North Korean UAVs and issued orders for countermeasures by personally inspecting weapon systems.
Earlier, on the 27th, after receiving a report on UAV response from Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop, President Yoon expressed anger, saying, "If you don't even conduct proper training, does that mean you did nothing at all?" In his remarks at the Cabinet meeting the same day, he emphasized, "We will expedite the establishment of drone units and stealthify drones with cutting-edge technology to strengthen surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities."
On the previous day, President Yoon also convened an emergency meeting with the Presidential Secretariat and National Security Office staff, instructing, "Firmly retaliate and punish any provocations from North Korea. That is the strongest means to deter provocations."
At this meeting, the necessity of effectively enhancing our military's capabilities against North Korea's asymmetric threats was also discussed. President Yoon urged, "We must promptly review and supplement any shortcomings in the overall response system for all flying objects invading our airspace, not just North Korean UAVs," and added, "In response to North Korea's efforts to strengthen asymmetric forces, it is necessary to comprehensively review our military's force enhancement plans."
"Firm Retaliation and Punishment Against Acts Violating Our Freedom"
In particular, President Yoon stressed, "Only firm retaliation and punishment against acts that violate our freedom can deter provocations," and said, "Whether the opponent has nuclear weapons or any weapons of mass destruction, we must send a clear message to those who provoke, and we must never be afraid or hesitant."
He also urged key military commanders to maintain a strong mental readiness and focus on realistic training. The president stated, "Our military must become a strong force that instills an untouchable fear in the enemy and unwavering trust in the people," adding, "To achieve peace, we must prepare overwhelmingly superior war readiness. We must clearly realize that disguised peace cannot protect security and will even undermine its foundation."
