Next Year's Industrial Accident Insurance Rate Frozen at 1.53%... "Considering Economic Conditions"
The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 28th that it has decided to maintain the industrial accident insurance premium rate at 1.53% next year, the same as this year. It also decided to include repair fees for rehabilitation assistive devices as part of the industrial accident medical benefits to provide support.
The industrial accident insurance premium rate and the criteria for calculating medical benefits for next year were determined through deliberation by the 'Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance and Prevention Deliberation Committee,' composed of labor, management, and public interest members.
The industrial accident insurance premium rate is calculated by adding the industrial accident insurance premium rate by business type of 1.43% and the commuting accident rate of 0.10%. Looking at the rates by year, it has been decreasing: 1.80% in 2018, 1.65% in 2019, 1.56% in 2020, and 1.53% last year.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor explained, "Considering the economic situation due to COVID-19 and recent domestic and international economic conditions comprehensively, we have frozen the industrial accident insurance premium rate at this year's level."
The Ministry plans to promote efficient financial management measures to strengthen the mid- to long-term financial soundness of the industrial accident fund in preparation for the increasing trend of fund expenditures due to the expansion of industrial accident insurance benefit payments and prevention projects.
Insurance benefit expenditures increased from 5.9968 trillion KRW in 2020 to 6.4529 trillion KRW last year, and are expected to reach 6.6763 trillion KRW this year.
The Ministry plans to review increasing the insurance premium surcharge for workplaces with serious accidents and raising the premium collection standards when serious accidents occur at workplaces not enrolled in industrial accident insurance, to establish an industrial accident prevention system at workplaces.
The Ministry also decided to newly include and support oxygen therapy tests for pneumoconiosis and pneumoconiosis complications, which had not been recognized as industrial accident insurance medical benefits until now, as well as repair fees for rehabilitation assistive devices.
