View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] On the 26th, SK On announced that from next month on the 5th, it will showcase its high-tech products SF Battery, NCM9 series, and S-PACK, collectively known as the 'SNS Trio,' at CES 2023, the world's largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition held in Las Vegas, USA.
SK On's SF Battery is a high-nickel battery with a nickel content of 83%, capable of driving over 400 km on a single charge. Thanks to SK On's special coating technology, it can be charged up to 80% in just 18 minutes, making it the fastest charging battery currently commercialized. At CES 2023, it won the top innovation award in the 'Embedded Technology' category for the first time in the battery industry and also received the innovation award in the 'Vehicle Technology and Advanced Mobility' category, achieving a double crown. It has been installed in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, which were selected as 'Car of the Year' at various award ceremonies including the prestigious '2022 World Car Awards (WCA)'.
The NCM9 is a high-performance high-nickel battery with a nickel content of about 90%. SK On developed it for the first time in the world in 2019. While a higher nickel content increases driving range, it also reduces safety, a drawback that SK On has addressed with its unique Z-folding technology. Z-folding is a technique that wraps the separator inside the battery in a zigzag (z) shape, perfectly separating the cathode and anode to prevent fire risks.
The NCM9 battery won innovation awards in the 'Embedded Technology' and 'Vehicle Entertainment and Safety' categories at CES 2022, and at CES 2023, it once again proved its excellence by receiving the innovation award in the 'Vehicle Technology and Advanced Mobility' category with the NCM9+, which increases driving range and reduces charging time.
The NCM9 is installed in the electric version of the popular American pickup truck, the Ford F-150 Lightning. Since its launch in the US at the end of April, the F-150 Lightning has sold over 13,000 units by November, becoming a best-selling car.

Ultimately, the goal is to eliminate modules entirely and connect cells directly to the pack. By installing more cells in the space where modules would be, it increases the battery's driving range and reduces manufacturing costs. Additionally, S-PACK incorporates SK On's cutting-edge technology that prevents heat from spreading throughout the entire battery pack even in the event of a fire, further enhancing safety.
SK On will also showcase a prototype of an all-solid-state battery developed in collaboration with Solid Power, a US-based all-solid-state battery developer. All-solid-state batteries use a non-flammable solid electrolyte between the battery's cathode and anode, reducing the risk of ignition and offering high energy density, making them the next-generation batteries expected to replace current lithium-ion batteries.
