Gwangyang-si's 'Baealdo Island Garden' Emerges as a Tourist Hotspot
Korea Tourism Organization's Selection of '2022 Spring Season 25 Safe Tourism Destinations' Boosts Popularity
Confidently Included in 'Gwangyang-si Top 10 News' Chosen by Citizens
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Baedo Island Garden in Gwangyang City, Jeollanam-do, which gained rapid popularity after being named one of the Korea Tourism Organization's 25 Safe Tourism Destinations for the 2022 spring season, is firmly establishing itself as a sustainable tourist attraction.
As 2022 came to a close, Baedo Island Garden was proudly included in Gwangyang City's Top 10 News survey, which asked citizens about the most notable policies and major projects that garnered the most public interest.
Baedo Island Garden, where rivers, harbors, and the sea harmonize, was spotlighted as a safe travel destination by the Korea Tourism Organization and Jeollanam-do during the COVID-19 era, when safety has become the new standard for travel.
After being selected as one of the Korea Tourism Organization’s ‘25 Safe Tourism Destinations for the 2022 Spring Season’ and being featured on urban travel documentaries such as KBS’s “Kim Young-chul’s Neighborhood Walk” and “Saengsaeng Information,” the number of visitors surged.
The city installed unique seasonal photo zones and held various events such as busking and SNS promotions, while maintaining thorough quarantine measures, making it a safe and popular spot for both citizens and tourists.
Additionally, emphasizing that it is both the starting and ending point of the most beautiful Seomjin River Bicycle Path, the city hosted riding events to raise awareness about the importance of the global environment and to practice ESG principles.
Floating where the Seomjin River meets the sea, Baedo Island Garden offers a resting place where the heart and scenery meet, providing spiritual relaxation.
It also plays a significant role as a romantic platform, connecting Mangdeok Harbor and Baedo Waterfront Park via the Star Counting Bridge and Sunrise Bridge.
Beyond the Star Counting Bridge in Mangdeok Harbor lie valuable cultural heritages such as the preserved house of Jeong Byeong-wook, who safeguarded the posthumous works of poet Yun Dong-ju, and the Seonso, and in autumn, the area bustles with crowds attending the Jeoneo Festival.
Jung Gu-young, Director of Tourism, stated, “We are grateful that citizens have recognized the efforts and achievements to elevate Baedo Island Garden as a representative tourist attraction of Korea and selected it as one of Gwangyang City’s Top 10 News.”
He added, “We will continue to develop Baedo Island Garden into an attractive space where not only tourists but also citizens can frequently visit and take pride in, by showcasing media art themed on stars and completing Baedo Waterfront Park as Korea’s largest camping mecca.”
