Gwangju Gwangsan-gu Designated as a 'Women-Friendly City' for the Third Time
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Byung-gyu) has taken a step closer to equal companionship by being designated as a ‘Women-Friendly City’ for 2023?2027 by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family.
This is the third designation following the first phase in 2012 and the second phase in 2017.
A ‘Women-Friendly City’ refers to a city where women and men participate equally in the process of implementing local policies, operating policies to empower women, and ensuring care and safety.
Gwangsan-gu has made efforts such as establishing women’s statistics, operating joint indicators for department evaluations, forming and operating a women’s job and safety council, promoting the Gwangsan Citizen Dividend support project for social contribution activities, operating Saerohan (Safety, Security, Well-being) Gwangsan, and creating a village care community nurtured together by the entire village.
Through these efforts, it was recognized for laying the foundation of a women-friendly city that residents can feel, allowing it to maintain its qualification as a ‘Women-Friendly City.’
In January next year, Gwangsan-gu will sign an agreement with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and promote various projects until 2027 under the vision of ‘Equal Companionship, a Women-Friendly City Beneficial to All.’
The five major goals are ▲ Establishing a foundation for promoting gender equality ▲ Expanding women’s economic and social participation ▲ Enhancing community safety ▲ Creating a family-friendly (care) environment ▲ Strengthening women’s capacity for community activities, and projects to realize these goals will be expanded and reinforced.
