Seoul City Reduces Household Food Waste by 10% Through Focused Management
Household Food Waste Disposal Reduced by 219 Tons Per Day Compared to 2019
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Seoul City announced on the 22nd that it reduced household food waste emissions by 10.3% compared to 2019 through focused management of food waste reduction.
In May, the city established a pilot project plan to distribute household food waste reduction devices and supplied 224 small household reduction devices and 1,206 manual sink dehydrators.
As a result of analyzing (monitoring) the effectiveness of household reduction devices through the pilot project, the small household reduction devices showed about a 70.5% reduction effect, and the manual sink dehydrators showed about a 12.3% reduction effect.
The city also newly supplied 1,415 food waste wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) volume-based chargers that charge fees based on the amount of food waste disposed of in apartment complexes in Seoul to encourage voluntary reduction by citizens. Additionally, 99 large reduction devices were newly installed and supported in places where large amounts of food waste are generated, such as apartment complexes and group meal service facilities, enabling immediate food waste processing at the source.
Seoul City is also making efforts to reduce food waste generated not only in households but also in businesses. To improve awareness and encourage voluntary reduction in large businesses, customized consultations were conducted by visiting 21 business sites with high emissions. Based on the consultation results, guidelines and promotional materials for food waste generation suppression measures were produced and distributed to autonomous districts and businesses.

Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of Seoul City's Climate and Environment Headquarters, stated, “Due to the shortage of public food waste processing facilities in Seoul, it is urgent to reduce emissions at the source.” He added, “Seoul City will strive to reduce food waste at the source through various policy supports. We hope citizens will take an interest in reducing food waste and actively practice it.”
