Jeju Island, Urgent Need to Expand Capacity of Dongbu Sewage Treatment Plant
Average Daily Sewage Volume from January to November This Year: 11,864 Tons... 98.9% of Facility Capacity of 12,000 Tons per Day Utilized
Concerns Over Exceeding Sewage Capacity in Summer... Active Cooperation from Local Residents Requested for Sewage Treatment Capacity Expansion
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 16th that 98.9% of the daily treatable sewage volume is flowing into the Woljeong-ri East Sewage Treatment Plant, making the expansion of sewage treatment capacity urgent.
The East Sewage Treatment Plant expansion project aims to double the daily sewage treatment capacity from the current 12,000 tons to 24,000 tons by adding 12,000 tons to stably treat domestic sewage generated in the eastern region (Jocheon-eup, Gujwa-eup).
From January to November this year, the average daily sewage volume at the East Sewage Treatment Plant was 11,864 tons, reaching 98.9% of the current facility capacity of 12,000 tons/day, raising concerns about exceeding sewage capacity.
The East Sewage Treatment Plant has already exceeded the appropriate operating rate and is approaching its maximum sewage treatment capacity, making expansion urgent not only for stable operation of the sewage treatment plant but also to secure the health of local residents and a clean environment.
Accordingly, Jeju Province plans to thoroughly fulfill its promises with Woljeong-ri Village regarding the East Sewage Treatment Plant expansion project and actively consult and cooperate from the residents' perspective in promoting resident-requested projects and support projects.
As Woljeong-ri Village opposes the inflow of sewage from Samyang and Hwabuk areas and the leachate transfer treatment from the Jeju Environmental Resource Circulation Center, Jeju Province promised that sewage from Samyang and Hwabuk areas will not be transferred to the East Treatment Plant.
The leachate from the Jeju Environmental Resource Circulation Center is also currently treated with an advanced leachate treatment facility and reused as recycled water within the center.
Kang Jae-seop, head of Jeju Province Water and Sewage Headquarters, said, “The expansion of the East Sewage Treatment Plant, an essential infrastructure, is absolutely necessary to protect residents' health and create a pleasant living environment,” and added, “We ask for the cooperation of local residents to expand sewage treatment capacity in a timely manner.”
Meanwhile, Jeju Province explained parts of the facts that differ from the claims of the Woljeong-ri Emergency Countermeasures Committee through the ‘East Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion Project Explanation Materials’ distributed on the 14th.
