[Asia Economy Reporter Seohee Lee] The list of 46 players who secured their 2023 LPGA Tour cards after fierce competition has been finalized. This year, a large number of rookies of various ages, nationalities, and professions were selected, raising expectations for the next season.
The LPGA Qualifying (Q) School Series, held over two weeks from the 4th to the 11th (local time) at Highland Oaks Golf Club (par 72) in Dothan, Alabama, USA, has come to a close. Among the 46 players selected through this tournament, 23 are rookies entering the LPGA Tour for the first time.
Among Korean players, Haeran Yu finished as the overall 'medalist' with a final total of 29-under-par 545 strokes. Yu earned both the LPGA Tour card and a winner's prize of $15,000. Park Geumgang, who has been active on the LPGA's developmental tour, also succeeded in advancing to the LPGA Tour next year by finishing tied for 9th with a final total of 20-under-par 554 strokes.
Particularly this year, there is interest in the diverse backgrounds of players stepping onto the LPGA Tour stage for the first time. For the first time, the Q Series passing list includes three teenagers and two players aged over 30. Among them, Alexa Pano (USA) is the actual protagonist of the golf documentary "The Short Game," which depicts the challenges of junior players. Her story attracted attention even before the Q Series began. Although Pano narrowly missed finishing in the top 20 by one stroke, she will be able to compete in both the first and second tours next year.
Valerie Fleta (Colombia) also has a noteworthy story. Having turned professional just the month before the Q Series, Fleta is a fifth-year student at Michigan State University who studied for final exams throughout the tournament period, which overlapped with the competition. After a somewhat disappointing first round of 1-over-par 73, Fleta said, "At home, I tried to forget everything that happened on the golf course and focus only on school. That was much better."
Bailey Tardy (USA), who finished second with 27-under-par 547 strokes, two strokes behind Haeran Yu, also has a touching experience.
The Epson Tour, the LPGA's developmental tour, is one of the pathways to the LPGA regular tour. Players who finish in the top 10 of the Epson Tour money rankings can compete on the LPGA regular tour the following year.
However, Tardy tasted disappointment twice in a row at the threshold of the LPGA Tour. In 2020, she missed the LPGA Tour card by $343, and in 2021 by $1,765. The heartbreak was so great that she almost gave up on participating in this year's Q Series but submitted her application just 15 minutes before the deadline. Ultimately, encouraged by those around her, the application she hastily submitted led her to her first LPGA opportunity.
Ines Laklalech (Morocco), the first Moroccan player to step onto the LPGA Tour stage, drew courage from Walid Regragui, the coach who led Morocco's national soccer team.

After the Q Series, Laklalech explained, "Coach Regragui's remarks after defeating Portugal 1-0 in the World Cup quarterfinals were impressive. His words gave me the confidence that anything is possible." Coach Regragui had said in an interview right after the Portugal match, "Dreaming costs nothing. We can also dream of winning."
