US-Korea-Japan Senior Representatives on North Korea Nuclear Issue Meet in Jakarta to Discuss 'Sanctions on North Korea'
Meeting of South Korea, US, and Japan's North Korea nuclear chief representatives in Jakarta, Indonesia on the afternoon of the 13th
Discussion expected on strengthening sanctions over North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo In-ho] The chief representatives for North Korea's nuclear issue from South Korea, the United States, and Japan will hold face-to-face talks on the afternoon of the 13th in Jakarta, Indonesia, marking their first in-person meeting in three months.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 13th, Kim Gun, Director General of the Ministry's Peace Negotiations on the Korean Peninsula, Sung Kim, U.S. Special Representative for North Korea, and Takehiro Funakoshi, Director of the Asia and Oceania Bureau at Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will share recent assessments of the situation on the Korean Peninsula and discuss North Korea's denuclearization in Jakarta.
Following the South Korea-U.S. chief representatives' talks the previous day, the three countries will hold trilateral consultations on the same day, after which the South Korea-Japan chief representatives will also hold bilateral talks.
This face-to-face meeting among the three chief representatives is the first since their meeting in Tokyo, Japan, on September 7.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that since Sung Kim concurrently serves as the U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia and is currently stationed in Jakarta, the three representatives decided to hold their meeting there.
South Korea, the U.S., and Japan are focusing on enhancing the effectiveness of sanctions through trilateral cooperation and independent sanctions, as the United Nations Security Council has been unable to issue additional sanctions or statements against North Korea's provocations due to opposition from China and Russia.
On the 2nd, the three countries simultaneously announced independent sanctions measures against North Korea.
In this consultation, they are expected to conduct more in-depth discussions on sanctions against North Korea and deliberate on sanction measures to be taken if North Korea conducts additional major provocations such as nuclear tests.
There is also a possibility that they will exchange views on ways to elicit a constructive role from China.
