This book was published by The Carbon Almanac Network, a nonprofit organization organized in 2022 as a project by Seth Godin, known as the "guru of marketers worldwide." Over 300 volunteers from around the world collaborated to include more than 200 articles related to climate change. It explains the challenges of climate change through rich visual materials such as infographics, comics, illustrations, tables, and graphs. It is designed to be easily read by anyone?from readers newly interested in climate change, planners or marketers who need to consider ESG, investors trying to understand macro trends, to environmental activists or policymakers seeking new information.
Convenience has the power to prevent us from imagining other options. Once you use a washing machine, hand-washing clothes feels unreasonable no matter how cheap it might be. After experiencing streaming services, waiting to watch a program at a fixed time seems foolish and outdated. To resist convenience?that is, to avoid using a smartphone or Google?requires special effort to the point of seeming eccentric, if not madness, in today’s world. p.6
In the last century, we began installing electrical outlets in buildings. Devices plugged into outlets can account for more than 50% of a building’s total energy consumption. The energy used by these devices is called plug load. Plug load represents a significant portion of electricity consumption and carbon emissions. p.73
More than 40% of the world’s population lives within 100 km of the coast. Eight out of ten residents in major cities live there. Despite the increasingly visible and severe impacts of climate change, populations continue to grow in many coastal areas. The climate change and geographical changes in densely populated areas mean that coastal residents will be the first and most severely affected by climate change. p.108
Climate change negatively affects human mental health. Eco-anxiety is not yet an officially diagnosed condition but is widespread. Recent studies show that about 70% of adults and 85% of children experience varying degrees of eco-anxiety. p.154
