Son Heung-min "I Truly Feel the 1% Chance Is Very Big"
Thanking Fans "Overcoming Difficulties with Unwavering Support"
Son Heung-min (Tottenham), captain of the national soccer team who completed the 2022 Qatar World Cup, expressed his gratitude to the fans. On the 9th, he posted a photo of himself taken at the World Cup on social media (SNS) along with a lengthy message. He said, "I have worked hard and kept my eyes on the dream for four years," adding, "Not every moment was good, but I believe the disappointing moments made us stronger and created the current national team. At every moment, I was able to overcome it thanks to your unwavering support from behind."
The national soccer team advanced to the round of 16 for the first time in 12 years in this tournament. Although they lost 1-4 to Brazil and did not reach the quarterfinals, they showed fighting spirit in every match from the group stage and received much support. The one who sparked this fighting spirit was Son Heung-min. He suffered an orbital fracture during a club match in early last month, underwent surgery, and returned in about three weeks. Wearing a black protective mask, he played all three group stage matches and the round of 16 match until the end. In particular, in the third group stage match against Portugal (Korea 2-1 win), he assisted Hwang Hee-chan (Wolverhampton) with the winning goal in the 46th minute of the second half.
Reflecting on the World Cup journey, Son Heung-min wrote, "Our players worked really hard behind the scenes, and it was an honor just to play as representatives of the Republic of Korea, running until our bodies were broken." He continued, "There was regret because we believed we could definitely go higher, but there is absolutely no regret," and added, "I think this unforgettable World Cup was made possible because every player and staff, including myself, put in effort every single day without missing a moment."
