Gwangju Seo-gu Provides Reflective Bands and Thermal Underwear to Recycling Collectors

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim I-gang) is providing safety supplies to recycling collectors in the district to prepare for the severe cold season.

According to Seo-gu on the 8th, the support targets are 85 collectors who are engaged in recycling collection activities within the district.

The support items include luminous bands and two sets of thermal underwear that securely fix recyclable materials such as waste paper on carts or trucks and reflect light during nighttime and early morning activities to reduce the risk of traffic accidents for the collectors.

A survey conducted in 2021 on recycling collectors in the district confirmed that 85 people are active in Seo-gu, of which 80 are aged 65 or older.

In particular, it was found that many elderly people use carts to collect waste paper, exposing them to the risk of traffic accidents and facing difficulties in managing their health.

Accordingly, Seo-gu enacted the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Recycling Collectors Support Ordinance and is providing social support such as building a safety net and protecting the health of recycling collectors.

A Seo-gu official said, “Although these are small items, we hope the sentiment of wishing for the safety and health of the elderly is conveyed,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to ensure that the collectors can work safely.”
