Woods "Returning After 5 Months"... 'Special Event The Match'
Woods-McIlroy Face Off Against Spieth-Thomas in The Match
Woods Returns in July After The Open, Third Appearance in The Match
7 PM Night Game, 12-Hole Match Play Instead of 18 Holes
[Asia Economy Reporter No Woo-rae] The "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA) is making an appearance after five months.
On the 10th (local time), Woods will participate in the special event "The Match" held at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, USA. Woods will team up with world No. 1 Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) to face off against Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas (both USA). The match will be held as a night game starting at 7 p.m. It will be a 12-hole match play, not 18 holes.
This is Woods' first time back on the field since the major Open Championship in July. He was scheduled to participate in the special event Hero World Challenge held at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, which ended on the 5th, but withdrew due to pain in his right foot.
This will be Woods' third appearance in The Match. Woods competed against Phil Mickelson (USA) in the first edition of The Match in November 2018. In 2020, he teamed up with NFL quarterback Peyton Manning to face Mickelson and Tom Brady (both USA). McIlroy, Spieth, and Thomas are making their first appearances in The Match. Thomas served as a commentator for the event in 2020.
In February last year, Woods was seriously injured in a car accident in Los Angeles (LA) County, California, breaking both legs. After lying in bed for three months, he continued treatment and rehabilitation, and made his comeback at the Masters in April after 1 year and 5 months. Woods participated in three major tournaments including the PGA Championship and the Open in May, then took a break.

Woods said, "I am looking forward to this year's match," adding, "It is even more meaningful because we can help the victims affected by Hurricane Ian." The event will be broadcast live on the American cable channel TNT. Players will use open microphones so viewers can hear conversations and on-site sounds vividly. After this event, Woods will participate in the family event PNC Championship with his son Charlie. He was the runner-up in this tournament last year.
