The Largest Computer Graphics Conference 'SIGGRAPH Asia 2022' Opens in Daegu ... 5,000 Attendees from 50 Countries
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] ‘SIGGRAPH Asia 2022,’ the largest Asian conference in the field of computer graphics sponsored by Daegu City, will be held at Daegu EXCO from the 6th to the 9th.
The SIGGRAPH event, which has a prestigious 50-year history, was held annually in North America, but since 2008, it has been held in North America during the summer and in Asia during the winter. In Korea, it is being held in Daegu for the first time in 12 years since it was hosted in Seoul in 2010.
The conference is expected to attract about 5,000 participants from over 50 countries worldwide, with approximately 1,000 international attendees. Participants include scholars, researchers, businesspeople, developers, artists, and students from all industries such as art, science, design, media, engineering, computer graphics (CG), and interaction technology (real-time viewing technology).
Main programs include keynote speeches by experts from domestic and international tech companies, presentations of outstanding papers, an art gallery showcasing the latest media works, screenings of the latest films featuring animation and special effects, totaling 21 programs. There will also be a session introducing Korea’s proud K-content.
The opening keynote on the 7th will be delivered by Luc Julia, Chief Technology Officer of the French automobile group Renault, under the theme “There is no such thing as AI.”
On the 8th, Lee Sung-ho, CEO of digital media art production company District, will give a keynote on “Changes in the Visual Domain Market Brought by Immersive Content Technology,” and Kim Dae-wook, Co-CEO of Naver Z, developer of the augmented reality avatar service Zepeto, will speak on “Enhancing Production Capabilities with Metaverse Technology.”
Research papers will be presented by 823 researchers from 174 institutions across 20 countries, introducing around 400 papers. An exhibition featuring global companies in 3D games, hardware, and software such as NVIDIA, Google, Unity, Forum8, Pixar, Sony, Dell, and Foundry will also be held. In Daegu, eight companies including Sejung IS, Azone Tech, 3D Automation, Y Design Lab, Digi Entertainment, Ellaka Studio, YH Database, and PK Art & Media will participate, showcasing metaverse platforms and 3D stereoscopic imaging technology.
Meanwhile, the event will be attended by 19 domestic and international experts from nine countries with the highest authority as organizing committee members, including Professor Jung Soon-ki of Kyungpook National University’s Department of Computer Science, No So-young, director of Art Center Nabi and daughter of former President Roh Tae-woo, Professor Kim Min-hyuk of KAIST, and Professor Lee Jae-hee of Seoul National University.

As Daegu City is making significant investments to intensively foster the ABB (Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, Big Data) industry, one of the five future industries, this event is expected to provide local ABB companies with opportunities to experience new technologies and build networks with overseas global companies such as NVIDIA and Meta.
