'The Youngest Son of a Chaebol Family' Craze... Sweeping 1st Place Across Southeast Asian Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Actor Song Joong-gi's influence was tremendous. JTBC's Friday-Saturday-Sunday drama 'The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate' swept the number one spot on online video service (OTT) charts in major Asian countries.
According to Asia's largest OTT platform Viu on the 1st, 'The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate' ranked first in the most-watched content for ten days after the release of episodes 1 through 6 in Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. Viu exclusively purchased overseas broadcasting rights and resold them to local partners worldwide. This is significant as it marks a step beyond the K-drama genre, which had been limited to romance.
A Viu representative said, "It is very impressive that it has transcended genre limitations. Asian viewers typically prefer romance comedy genres among K-dramas, but 'The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate,' despite being a corporate drama, has received great love due to its solid storyline and the presence exuded by actor Song Joong-gi."
They added, "The steep success curve is attributed to the thrice-weekly release schedule, which increased early immersion for OTT subscribers, as well as the popularity and recognition of actor Song Joong-gi, who has long established a strong fandom overseas through dramas like 'Descendants of the Sun.'"
