The Criminal Division 12 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Andongbeom) on the 1st sentenced male defendants A and B, who were indicted on charges including special robbery and violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (joint confinement), to four years and three years in prison, respectively. Defendant C, who was charged with possession of stolen goods, was sentenced to six months in prison with a one-year probation.
In a subsequent trial, two other men indicted on the same charges were sentenced to four years and two years and six months in prison, respectively.
The court stated the sentencing rationale, saying, "Defendants including A bear heavy responsibility for confining and assaulting the victim," but added, "They admitted most of the charges and submitted multiple letters of remorse."
They are accused of attempting to kidnap a man in his 20s by putting him into a car near an apartment in Munbae-dong, Yongsan-gu, around 12:20 a.m. on August 15. The victim escaped by jumping out of the car while it was driving around Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu.
The police responded to a witness report and tracked the suspects near the crime scene using closed-circuit television (CCTV), arresting one of the group members and taking him in for voluntary accompaniment. During the police investigation, the man reportedly stated that there was a debt relationship among them.
