[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) will hold the ‘2022 Vietnam-Laos Green Growth Partnership’ for five days starting from the 28th in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Vientiane, Laos. This is the first case of a public-private cooperative international greenhouse gas reduction project under the ‘2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee’ launched last October. Ten domestic companies are participating.

Vietnam signed the ‘Korea-Vietnam Basic Agreement on Climate Change Cooperation’ with South Korea last year. It is the first country where the government is promoting bilateral cooperation on greenhouse gas reduction. Laos is among the 18 priority cooperation countries selected by the government. KOTRA will conduct ▲Green Growth Partnership ForumGreenhouse Gas Reduction Project Partnering Consultation ▲visits to carbon neutrality and procurement-related institutions and companies with both countries during the event.

At the Green Growth Partnership Forum, the current status of greenhouse gas reduction projects and related policies by country will be shared. Officials from government ministries of Vietnam and Laos, the World Bank, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and other local international organization offices will participate in the forum. At the partnering consultation, a total of 68 consultations will be held with 42 Vietnamese and Laotian clients and buyers to discover carbon reduction projects for 10 domestic companies. There will also be site visits to greenhouse gas reduction projects registered under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

KOTRA plans to strengthen green growth partnerships between countries and establish a foundation for greenhouse gas projects through this event. Jung Wooyoung, head of KOTRA’s Innovation Growth Headquarters, said, “We hope this project will be a signal fire for our companies’ international greenhouse gas reduction projects and that project discovery for achieving the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) will become more active,” adding, “We will spare no effort to support booming exports of equipment for international reduction projects.”

KOTRA is the designated international greenhouse gas reduction agency jointly appointed with the Korea Energy Agency to achieve the government’s NDC. To respond to related issues, KOTRA established a Climate Change Response Team last February. From next year, it plans to launch full-scale international greenhouse gas reduction pilot projects.
