Zigbang and the World's First UWB-Based Digital Home Key Service
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] As the government significantly relaxes regulations on ultra-wideband wireless technology (UWB), Samsung Electronics becomes the world's first to support a 'digital home key' using UWB technology on Samsung Pay.
On the 29th, Samsung Electronics announced that it has integrated the 'Zigbang UWB Smart Door Lock' digital home key into Samsung Pay in collaboration with comprehensive proptech company Zigbang. UWB technology is a short-range wireless communication protocol that uses high-frequency bands, enabling precise distance measurement down to the centimeter (cm) level and even direction detection.
Samsung Pay users who have installed the Zigbang UWB Smart Door Lock can easily open their home doors simply by approaching the door lock. As long as the user carries their smartphone, they can conveniently enter without any additional authentication procedures such as password input, enabling contactless access. Users can also set up notifications through the Zigbang app to know who is entering when the door is opened. If the user loses their smartphone, they can disable the digital home key usage via the 'Find My Device' feature on a PC.
Samsung Pay's Zigbang UWB digital home key is available on devices equipped with UWB functionality such as the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Galaxy S22 Ultra/Plus. Samsung Electronics plans to continue releasing smartphones equipped with UWB. Samsung established FiRa, a UWB technology standards organization, in 2019, and this digital home key service also utilizes UWB technology certified by FiRa.

The digital home key protects user information and encrypted keys through an industry-leading security chipset. Samsung explains that the precise UWB technology ensures safety from potential hacking risks such as wireless signal interference or interception. Samsung Electronics plans to strengthen cooperation with partners and expand Samsung Pay's user convenience by listening to user feedback.
