IPTV Surpasses 20 Million Monthly Subscribers This Year... KT Ranks First
Ministry of Science and ICT Announces Paid Broadcasting Subscriber Statistics for the First Half of the Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The number of IPTV subscribers per month surpassed 20 million for the first time in the first half of this year, thanks to the steady growth of the three IPTV companies. IPTV, which first surpassed comprehensive wired broadcasting (SO) in terms of monthly subscribers in November 2017, has widened the subscriber gap to 7.38 million.
According to the statistics on 'Average Paid Broadcasting Subscribers and Market Share in the First Half of 2022' and 'Paid Broadcasting Subscribers as of the End of June' announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 28th, the total number of paid broadcasting subscribers in the first half of this year (6-month monthly average) was 36.01 million, an increase of 370,000 compared to the first half. However, the increase slowed down compared to the first half (530,000).
By media type, IPTV had 20.20 million subscribers (56.11%), SO had 12.82 million (35.62%), and satellite broadcasting had 2.98 million (8.27%), with IPTV subscribers exceeding 20 million for the first time.
By operator, KT ranked first with 8.59 million subscribers (23.85%), followed by SK Broadband (IPTV) with 6.25 million (17.35%), LG Uplus with 5.37 million (14.91%), LG HelloVision with 3.74 million (10.40%), KT Skylife with 2.98 million (8.27%), and SK Broadband (SO) with 2.85 million (7.91%).
The number of subscribers and market share of the three IPTV companies also steadily increased. KT group (KT + KT Skylife + HCN) accounted for 12.84 million subscribers, up 150,000 from the first half, making up 36.65%. LG group (LG Uplus + LG HelloVision) recorded 9.11 million subscribers, up 180,000, accounting for 25.31%, and SK Broadband (IPTV + SO) had 9.09 million subscribers, up 170,000, accounting for 25.26%.
Meanwhile, despite the overall stagnation in the paid broadcasting market, the increase in total subscribers is believed to be due to the effectiveness of multiple and group subscriptions. The number of individual subscribers, including general households and corporations, was 16,513,827, accounting for 45.86%. This is a decrease of over 110,000 compared to the second half of 2020, showing continued stagnation. On the other hand, during the same period, multiple and group subscribers, including hospitals, hotels, and stores that contract multiple lines, were 16.89 million (46.91%) and 2.60 million (7.23%), respectively, increasing by 1.48 million and 60,000 compared to before.
