View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Attention is focused on Samsung Electronics' new Galaxy S23 series, expected to be launched early next February. The three models will feature a unified design and cameras with up to 200 million pixels, aiming to enhance competitiveness in the premium smartphone market.
According to foreign media and IT tipsters on the 26th, the front design of the S23 series is expected to be similar to its predecessor. It is anticipated to maintain a flat screen, punch-hole camera, and metal frame. The screen sizes are also expected to remain the same as before: 6.1 inches for the standard model, 6.6 inches for the Plus (+) model, and 6.8 inches for the Ultra model.
The camera design is expected to change by applying a unified waterdrop design. Previously, this design was only applied to the highest-end 'Ultra' model, but it will be expanded to the base and Plus (+) models with the Contour-Cut design.
The camera features are expected to continue innovating. The S23 Ultra is likely to be equipped with a 200-megapixel camera. Since the Galaxy S20 launched in 2020, Samsung has equipped its top models with 108-megapixel cameras, so this represents nearly a twofold increase in three years. When Samsung unveiled the S22 series in February this year, it heavily promoted the 'Nightography' feature specialized for night photography, likening it to 'tiger eyes.'
The AP performance, known as the 'brain of the smartphone,' is also expected to improve. The AP is the core system semiconductor of mobile devices, controlling two key factors: performance and heat generation. Apple's implementation of high-performance A15 Bionic and A16 Bionic chips has increased pressure on Qualcomm. The Qualcomm 'Snapdragon 8 Gen 1' used in the S22 series earlier this year was criticized for not matching the A15 in terms of heat management.
The market expects Qualcomm's latest AP, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, to be installed in the S23 series. According to Qualcomm's Q4 (July-September) earnings report, CFO Akash Palkhiwala stated, "The Qualcomm adoption rate in the Galaxy S23 will reach 100%."
The battery will also be improved. The S23 standard model is expected to adopt a 3900mAh battery, and the Plus model a 4700mAh battery. This represents an increase of 200mAh compared to the previous models. This improvement is seen as a response to criticism over the reduced battery capacity in the S22 series. The S23 Ultra model is expected to maintain the existing 5000mAh battery.
Some expect the fingerprint sensor to be enhanced as well. Through Qualcomm's 3D Max integration, the fingerprint recognition area is expected to expand beyond the current range, and additional security options such as 'dual-hand fingerprint recognition' may be offered.
Samsung has traditionally held its Unpacked (new product launch) event every February, but this year the release timing may be moved up. According to TechRadar and others, the S23 series is expected to be unveiled in the first week of February, which could lead to sales starting around February 17. The S22 series was unveiled on February 10 (local time) this year.

The price is expected to remain similar to the previous S22 series. The S22 standard and Plus models were priced starting at 999,900 KRW and 1,199,000 KRW respectively, while the Ultra model started at 1,452,000 KRW.
