Wando County Council Secretariat Staff Deliver 1,218 Bottles of Drinking Water to Seohwado Residents
[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] The cries of water shortage suffering from residents in the island areas of Wando-gun are touching the hearts of public officials.
Amid the worst drought since meteorological observations began, causing increasing water shortage suffering for island residents, the staff of the Wando County Council Secretariat have stepped up to share the severe water shortage pain of the island residents.
Wando area is experiencing the worst drought with the lowest rainfall since meteorological observations began in 1973, and especially in the island areas, not only domestic water but even drinking water has been depleted, causing extreme suffering for the residents.
The 23 staff members of the Wando County Council Secretariat designated November 23 as the ‘Island Residents Water Shortage Suffering Sharing Day’ and purchased 1,218 bottles of 2-liter bottled water to be shipped to Seohwa-do, Gunoe-myeon.
Seohwa-do is home to 22 households and 33 residents. While domestic water is supplied through seawater desalination, drinking water is procured by purchasing bottled water for daily life.
Park Hong-yeol, the head of Seohwa-do, who received the bottled water, said, “The village residents are truly grateful that the county council public officials have cared about the difficulties of the island residents and shared the pain of water shortage.”
Heo Gung-hee, chairman of the Wando County Council, visited the bottled water delivery site and said, “I am truly grateful that the Secretariat staff, while diligently assisting the council members’ legislative activities, have also practiced compassion to share the residents’ suffering. I sincerely hope that the spirit of public officials serving the people reaches the heavens and that the drought will be relieved.”
Meanwhile, Wando-gun consists of a total of 265 islands, of which 55 are inhabited. Among the inhabited islands, 34 islands do not receive water supply from metropolitan or local waterworks, and 4,083 households with 8,011 people are suffering from water shortage.
