Public Transport Workers' Union: "Strike Expansion Due to Government and Local Authorities' Lack of Measures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jun-yi] The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union (KPTWU), affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, declared on the 23rd, one day before the general strike joined by the Cargo Solidarity Headquarters, that "it will grow bigger and stronger with the support and solidarity of the people."
In a statement released that afternoon, the KPTWU said, "The reason the scale of the strike continues to expand is due to the government's and local governments' lack of measures and incompetence, as they have failed to present any solution other than 'severe punishment' against the strike demanding public safety and national responsibility."
They continued, "The government has remained silent and ignored labor-government negotiations, focusing only on avoiding responsibility for the Itaewon tragedy, and now, as the strike approaches, it closes its ears to the causes and demands of the strike, repeating only calls for severe punishment," criticizing the authorities.
