The exercise was conducted as the first day of the "2022 National Radiation Disaster Prevention Joint Exercise (11.23~24)" and included ▲notification of abnormal signs at the Kori Nuclear Power Plant facilities due to an approaching typhoon ▲establishment and operation of the local radiation disaster prevention headquarters ▲stepwise radiation emergency alerts (white alert, blue alert, red alert) and corresponding emergency response measures.
County Governor Jeong Jong-bok, as the head of the local radiation disaster prevention headquarters, presided over the entire exercise by receiving situation reports according to radiation crisis alerts at the Gijang-gun Disaster Safety Situation Room and overseeing response activities related to resident protection measures.
He participated in a video conference with heads of central government agencies (Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, Ministry of the Interior and Safety, etc.), related local governments (Busan City, Gyeongnam Province, Gijang-gun), and affiliated organizations (KINS, Medical Institute, KHNP, etc.) to review emergency response measures for resident protection and support items by each agency.
Governor Jeong said, "Since the installation of Kori Unit 1, the first nuclear power plant in Korea, in Gijang-gun in 1978, there has been no large-scale radioactive leak accident domestically, but there have been several large-scale nuclear power plant accidents overseas." He emphasized, "A major nuclear accident such as a radioactive leak causes enormous national damage across society and the economy. While training for nuclear disaster preparedness is important, prevention is the top priority." He instructed, "Through this joint exercise, confirm whether there are any issues in Gijang-gun’s resident protection response system in case of emergency and ensure that any improvements are supplemented."
