The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) announced on the 21st at 1:21 PM local time that a magnitude 5.6 earthquake occurred in Cianjur Regency, West Java. The epicenter was 10 km deep. The epicenter is located about 70 km south of the capital, Jakarta. After the earthquake, 25 aftershocks were observed.
The Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) reported that more than 46 people have died and hundreds were injured due to this earthquake. The Cianjur local government reported that the death toll reached 56 and more than 700 people were injured. They also stated that the number of deaths is expected to continue rising due to the large number of injured.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Indonesia confirmed that seven Korean residents live in the Cianjur area, but there have been no casualties.
According to BNPB, property damage includes 52 houses damaged, as well as damage to four schools and places of worship. However, they explained that there is no tsunami risk caused by the earthquake.
The Indonesian government has provided shelters and support for the displaced victims. Medical personnel were dispatched to treat the injured, and rescue teams were reinforced.

BMKG explained that in Cianjur, the epicenter, shaking of intensity 5 was detected, while in Jakarta, the intensity was between 2 and 3. Intensity 5 means almost everyone feels the shaking, and dishes or windows may break. Intensity 3 is similar to the vibration caused by a large truck passing by.
