This year, due to ideal climate conditions, persimmon production and shipments have surged, causing product prices to plummet. As a result, farms already struggling with labor shortages are facing significant difficulties in harvesting persimmons.
In response, 26 people including Chairman Yang Hae-young, Jinju City Council members, and council secretariat staff visited two farms in Ilseongseong-myeon to directly harvest marketable sweet persimmons and Daebong persimmons.
Chairman Yang said, “Since COVID-19, despite rising labor costs, foreign labor has actually decreased, worsening the rural labor shortage. The council will work together to find ways to alleviate the difficulties faced by farms.”
Additionally, Councilor Jeong Yong-hak, whose constituency includes the farm locations, stated, “During the busy farming season, small contributions can collectively ease the significant hardships of farms. If citizens participate more in such volunteer activities, it will greatly help foster regional harmony through mutual growth.”
The city council plans to continue supporting local farmers by assisting with labor during the peak farming season alongside its main legislative activities.
