US Harris: "No Better Partner Than the US in the Indo-Pacific" Targeting China
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said on the 18th (local time), "There is no better partner than the United States in the Indo-Pacific region."
Vice President Harris, who is visiting Thailand to attend the 29th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, said in her speech at the APEC CEO Summit that "the United States has contributed to the Indo-Pacific regional economy for decades and across multiple generations."
Her remarks, which appear to reference China's sanctions against Australia and others, are interpreted as targeting China, which is competing to expand its influence in Southeast Asia and other regions.
When Australia excluded Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei from its 5G network project in 2018 at the request of the Trump administration, China retaliated by imposing high tariffs on more than ten Australian products, including wine, beef, barley, and coal.
Vice President Harris emphasized, "The United States, a strong partner of the Indo-Pacific economy and businesses, is based on cooperation, sustainability, transparency, and fairness."
She added, "We will make every effort to uphold and strengthen the rules and norms of the international economy that protect free markets and create predictability and stability."
On the same day, Vice President Harris highlighted the significance of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), launched in May, and also mentioned the U.S.'s 'containment' strategy against China.
Launched in May, the IPEF is a consultative body created by the United States to counter China's economic influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
Vice President Harris also introduced the 'Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment' (PGII), stating plans to invest $600 billion by 2027 in infrastructure development in developing countries.
