Musk Announces "Quit If You Dislike Intense, Long Working Hours"
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla who acquired Twitter, informed employees on the 16th (local time) that if they dislike intense long working hours, they should leave the company.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and others, CEO Musk stated in an internal email, "To build the groundbreaking Twitter 2.0 and succeed in fierce competition, we must become extremely hardcore," adding, "This means working intensely for long hours. Only outstanding work performance will be acceptable."
He pressured employees who survived the layoffs to decide whether to accept the "intense long working hours" or leave with three months' salary. In particular, CEO Musk attached a link in the email asking those who want to participate in the "new Twitter" to click "Yes" and set the deadline for response by 5 p.m. Eastern Time on the 17th. Those who do not reply by this time will be classified as leaving the company.
CEO Musk set Twitter's new direction as a "software and server company." He also confirmed the policy to operate the company centered around engineers going forward.
Earlier, CEO Musk, who acquired Twitter, laid off about 3,700 employees earlier this month. He also abolished remote work and reduced employee benefits such as free in-house meals. Musk, who cited "freedom of expression" as the reason for acquisition, has come under scrutiny for consecutively firing employees who criticized him on Twitter and elsewhere. He also revealed that he works seven days a week due to Twitter duties.
