Five Proud Nong-eo Farmers Awarded Among 39 Agricultural Merit Recipients

Farmers' Day was designated as Farmers and Fishermen's Day in 1996 and the name was changed the following year.
Taking the Chinese character for soil, the foundation of agriculture, November 11th was designated as a legal commemorative day. The event is held to promote the value of agriculture and rural areas and to boost the morale and pride of farmers.
About 120 people attended the event, including Governor Park Wan-su, Jang Jin-su, President of the Gyeongnam Federation of Agricultural and Fisheries Organizations, Kim Hyun-cheol, Chairman of the Agricultural, Marine, and Fisheries Committee of the Provincial Council, Kim Ju-yang, Head of the Gyeongnam Headquarters of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, and various agricultural organizations.
Under the theme "The Future of Agriculture in Gyeongnam," awards and commendations were presented to 9 recipients of government awards for Farmers' Day, 5 recipients of the Proud Farmers and Fishermen Award, 20 recipients for contributions to agricultural development, and 5 companies selected for Gyeongnam's excellent rice.
According to Gyeongsangnam-do, the "Proud Farmers and Fishermen Award," now in its 28th year, is the highest honor in the agricultural field, instilling honor and pride in farmers and fishermen who have contributed to the development of agriculture and fisheries and have practiced exemplary management.
The province announced that on the 11th, one top farmer or fisherman was selected in each of five categories: self-reliant management, new farmers and fishermen, creative development, organizational activities, and fisheries promotion.
In the self-reliant management category, Kwon Young-gyeong of Goseong-gun, who contributed to the dissemination of new farming technologies and the fostering of women farmers, was selected. In the new farmers and fishermen category, Kwon Young-min of Sancheong-gun, who developed a new strawberry variety, was chosen. In the creative development category, Ji Han-yeol of Changwon-si, who developed and distributed a ridger for carrot cultivation, was selected.
In the organizational activities category, Shim Deok-soon of Changnyeong-gun, recognized for organizing persimmon farms, received the award. In the fisheries promotion category, Hwang Jong-sam of Hadong-gun, who worked to revitalize autonomous fisheries through the creation of fishery resources, was honored.
In the Gyeongnam brand rice evaluation, "Gayatteul" from Gimhae-si won the quality grand prize, and "Suryohan Hapcheon Yeonghojinmi" from Hapcheon-gun received the top award.
The excellence awards went to "Jirisan Hamyang Hwangto Rice" from Hamyang-gun, "Goseong Dinosaur Land Nongodong Rice" from Goseong-gun, and "Golden Grasshopper Premium Rice" from Changnyeong-gun.

Governor Park said, "With rising prices of agricultural materials and falling prices of agricultural and livestock products, the agricultural environment has become difficult, and as governor, I feel deeply regretful. We will prepare policies and consider more carefully when allocating related budgets to provide even a little help to farmers at the provincial level."
