Prime Minister Han: "Full-scale Discussion on Police Reform Task Force and Improvement Plans Starting This Week"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] Prime Minister Han Duck-soo announced on the 14th, "Starting this week, we will begin full-scale discussions on major improvement measures through the government-wide task forces (TF) for the national safety system overhaul and the police reform TF."
On the same day, Prime Minister Han presided over the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting regarding the Itaewon incident at the Government Seoul Office and stated, "The government will prepare extraordinary measures to ensure that such unfortunate accidents never happen again."
Prime Minister Han said, "We will incorporate opinions from relevant experts as well as allow the public to participate," and urged, "Related ministries should promptly establish channels such as the ‘Safety Report’ platform where citizens can freely submit their opinions on safety measures."
He also mentioned, "From tomorrow until mid-March next year is the 'Winter Natural Disaster Countermeasure Period,'" adding, "The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that this winter's weather and rainfall will be similar to average years; however, as experienced during the heavy rains last August, uncertainties due to climate change are increasing."
He then requested, "The Ministry of the Interior and Safety, along with related agencies and local governments, should thoroughly manage situations and emergency responses 24/7 not only for natural disasters such as heavy snowfall but also for fires and wildfires."
Regarding the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) scheduled for the 17th, he instructed related agencies including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and the National Police Agency to do their utmost to ensure examinees can take the exam in a safe environment amid COVID-19 prevention measures.

He added, "After the exam, for areas where large crowds may gather, local governments and merchant organizations should cooperate to review preemptive safety management plans and conduct surveillance activities to an extent that may seem excessive."
