Following the announcement of the Korea-ASEAN (ASEAN) Indo-Pacific strategy the previous day, President Yoon reiterated the importance of peace and prosperity in the international community through cooperation between ASEAN and Northeast Asia.
President Yoon made these remarks at the ASEAN+3 (Korea-China-Japan) summit held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on the 12th. ASEAN is a regional cooperation organization consisting of Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, with Cambodia serving as the chair country this year.
President Yoon first noted, "This year marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of ASEAN+3," and evaluated, "ASEAN+3 played a significant role 25 years ago in overcoming the Asian financial crisis and strengthening practical cooperation between ASEAN and Northeast Asian countries."
He also reiterated the contents of Korea's Indo-Pacific strategy, emphasizing the need to unite efforts to overcome complex crises such as wars occurring worldwide, human rights violations, and food and energy security crises caused by climate change. President Yoon said, "I believe we must overcome these challenges through our solidarity and cooperation. The importance of cooperation between ASEAN and Korea-China-Japan is greater than ever," and stressed, "We must cooperate and unite closely in political, economic, social, and cultural fields."
As the chair country of the Korea-China-Japan summit this year, Korea expressed its determination to play an important role in cooperation with ASEAN. President Yoon stated, "Korea, as the chair country of the Korea-China-Japan summit this year and the coordinating country representing Korea-China-Japan in ASEAN+3, will actively fulfill its role," and urged, "I hope the trilateral cooperation mechanism, including the Korea-China-Japan summit, will be revitalized soon."
