'20 Million Diabetes Patients and High-Risk Groups'... Korean Diabetes Association to Hold Crisis Management Policy Forum on the 14th
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korean Diabetes Association announced on the 9th that it will hold a "Policy Forum for Crisis Management of the Second Diabetes Crisis in Commemoration of World Diabetes Day" at 2 p.m. on the 14th at the National Assembly Museum.
Co-hosted by Jeong Chun-sook, Chairperson of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, and the Korean Medical Biojournalists Association, this forum is organized to share awareness of the diabetes crisis in South Korea, where the number of diabetes patients has reached 6 million and the high-risk group for diabetes is close to 15 million, in commemoration of "World Diabetes Day" on November 14, and to urge the introduction of effective and practical national-level policies.
The forum will proceed with a World Diabetes Day commemorative ceremony, followed by keynote presentations, panel discussions, and a comprehensive discussion session. The keynote presentations will be chaired by Baek Se-hyun, President of the Korean Diabetes Association (Korea University Guro Hospital). Kim Cheol-jung, President of the Korean Medical Biojournalists Association (Chosun Ilbo), will present on "Management Strategies for Elderly Diabetes in a Super-Aged Society," and Kwon Hyuk-sang, Director of Public Relations for the Korean Diabetes Association (Yeouido St. Mary's Hospital), will present the current status and improvement plans for diabetes awareness in South Korea.
Following this, Moon Jun-sung, Secretary General of the Korean Diabetes Association (Yeungnam University Hospital), will propose the necessity of national management for diabetes patients and high-risk groups. Notably, the keynote presentations will include the first public disclosure of the "National Diabetes Awareness Survey Results" conducted by the Korean Diabetes Association.
The panel and comprehensive discussion session, themed "How to Resolve the Accelerated Diabetes Crisis," will be chaired by Won Gyu-jang, Chairman of the Korean Diabetes Association (Yeungnam University Hospital), and Kim Gil-won, Senior Vice President of the Korean Medical Biojournalists Association (Yonhap News Agency).
The Korean Diabetes Association recently announced through the "Diabetes Fact Sheet in Korea 2022" that as of 2020, one in six adults over 30 years old in South Korea is a diabetes patient, and about 20 million people fall into the category of diabetes patients or high-risk groups, indicating that the country is currently facing a diabetes crisis. The association also emphasized the growing importance of elderly diabetes management ahead of a super-aged society, noting that 39.2% of adults over 65 suffer from diabetes.
