[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Samsung Medical Center announced on the 7th that its Department of Urology has achieved 10,000 cases of robotic surgery. It has been 14 years since the first procedure was performed in January 2008.
In the Department of Urology at Samsung Medical Center, 1,700 robotic surgeries for urological cancers such as prostate cancer were performed last year alone, ranking 3rd in the world and 1st in Korea. As of April this year, the number of robot-assisted radical prostatectomies exceeded 5,000, and in August and September of last year, 300 robotic cystectomies and 2,000 robotic partial nephrectomies were respectively achieved.
Due to these achievements, Intuitive Surgical, the manufacturer of the robotic surgical system, designated Samsung Medical Center's Department of Urology as the first 'Epicenter' in Korea in the field of urological cancer this year. An Epicenter is a hospital or institution selected by Intuitive Surgical worldwide for having outstanding robotic surgery facilities and capabilities.
Additionally, the Department of Urology at Samsung Medical Center ranked 5th worldwide in the 'World's Best Specialized Hospitals' survey conducted and announced by the global news weekly Newsweek, proving its world-class status.
