[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-chul] Yangyang Namhae Port in Gangwon has been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' 'CLEAN National Fishing Port Pilot Project.'
Gangwon Province announced, "Among 115 national fishing ports nationwide, 21 ports applied, and after document and on-site evaluations, a total of 5 ports including Yangyang Namhae Port were finally selected, securing 15 billion KRW in national funding."
The 'CLEAN National Fishing Port' project aims to improve disorderly fishing port environments into pleasant spaces and expand functional and convenience facilities such as fishing gear warehouses for easy use.
The 'Namhae Port CLEAN Project' plans to invest a total of 26.9 billion KRW over three years starting in 2023 (15 billion KRW national funds, 9.7 billion KRW local funds, 2.2 billion KRW private funds), with collaboration among the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, local governments, and the private sector.
The main project contents include ▲ fishing port environment maintenance (removal of illegal and old facilities, zoning by function and vessel rearrangement, road and pedestrian environment maintenance) ▲ expansion of fishing port functional facilities (construction of fishing gear warehouses, creation of parking lots) ▲ creation of waterfront spaces (sea view parks, landscape lighting) ▲ expansion of marine leisure experience infrastructure (leisure boat mooring, children's water play experience centers), etc.
In particular, local residents including the Fisheries Cooperative and fishing villages will participate together to maintain not only public facilities but also privately owned facilities. Plans include replacing existing old facilities with new constructions such as the Fisheries Cooperative ice storage warehouse and the fishing village experience information center.
Namhae Port, the central fishing port of southern Yangyang's fisheries and one of Gangwon Province's three major beautiful ports, is known for its scenic natural landscape and abundant marine tourism resources such as fishing village experience villages, beaches, surfing, and skin diving education centers.
The province plans to continuously develop and promote resident capacity building, related festivals, marine tourism programs, and food in connection with this project to create synergistic effects.
