[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] POSCO announced on the 1st that it held the ‘Eco-friendly Materials Forum 2022’ at Songdo Convensia in Incheon.

The POSCO Eco-friendly Materials Forum has been held biennially since 2010 to strengthen business partnerships with customers and enhance exchanges with potential clients.

Previously, the forum was held under the name ‘Global EVI (Early Vendor Involvement) Forum’ focusing on steel, but from this event, the scope of customer participation was expanded to include secondary battery materials, and the name was changed to ‘Eco-friendly Materials Forum.’

This event was attended by over 1,100 participants from about 560 customer companies across 28 countries, and was conducted in a calm atmosphere by canceling or reducing some of the planned side events.

Held for the first time in four years due to COVID-19, the forum was attended by POSCO Group Chairman Choi Jeong-woo, Climate Change Center Chairperson Yoo Young-sook, Korean Wind Energy Society Chairman Lee Jang-ho, Marinus, CTO of HARDT, leading the development of future eco-friendly transportation Hyperloop, and Tony Keenan, Chairman of the Board of Pilbara Minerals, POSCO’s joint venture in ore lithium business, among others, who shared various opinions related to future eco-friendly materials.

In his keynote speech, Chairman Choi Jeong-woo expressed gratitude to customers who have continuously trusted POSCO to achieve world-class competitiveness, stating, “POSCO Group, as a corporate citizen aiming to be a 100-year company, seeks to lead a low-carbon society and leap forward as a representative company of eco-friendly future materials through the evolution and innovation of our business,” and added, “Now, by creating real value for customers with eco-friendly future materials, we want to open the future together.”

In particular, POSCO launched the master brand ‘Greenate,’ representing POSCO’s 2050 carbon neutrality, at this forum.

Greenate is a brand encompassing all departmental efforts and products for low-carbon eco-friendly steel production in the process of transitioning to hydrogen reduction steelmaking, as well as three major eco-friendly steel brand products represented by e Autopos, INNOVILT, and Greenable.

POSCO Group plans to systematically communicate its efforts and achievements toward achieving 2050 carbon neutrality internally and externally through Greenate.

Meanwhile, POSCO also held a business agreement (MOU) event for the supply and purchase of Mass Balance-type low-carbon steel products together with LG Electronics and Volvo Construction Equipment.

Mass Balance-type low-carbon steel refers to products certified by external professional organizations for carbon emission reduction performance, and customers who purchase these products are recognized as having reduced an equivalent amount of carbon emissions.

This agreement is the first case promoted by POSCO in line with the global green steel market, where the introduction of Mass Balance-type low-carbon steel is expanding.

In the afternoon, a total of 123 products and solutions were exhibited across seven sessions, including eco-friendly cars, energy shipbuilding, hot-rolled and wire rod, and secondary battery materials, centered on the three major eco-friendly brand zones.

For each session, 41 opinion leaders such as university professors were invited to explain business insights and the latest technological development directions related to the respective industries to customers, and POSCO’s product and solution development trends were also shared.

Additionally, POSCO introduced a metaverse platform experience zone, planned to begin development next year, to facilitate easy and convenient communication with customers.

POSCO Vice Chairman Kim Hak-dong said, “We will take the lead in building a digital steel ecosystem where stakeholders in the steel industry can collaborate,” adding, “The metaverse platform can expand as an open collaborative space that can create opportunities for various new businesses beyond steel business.”

Meanwhile, POSCO actively responded to customer demands for solutions and low carbon by signing 71 business agreements at this forum, expanding technology development cooperation and adoption of eco-friendly products.

Going forward, POSCO plans to focus its capabilities on creating a robust industrial ecosystem by always listening to customer voices and prioritizing promises with customers in the process of transitioning to a low-carbon system, providing eco-friendly and safe industry-specific customized solutions.
