Daewoo Shipbuilding, World's First Container Carrier Equipped with High-Manganese Steel LNG Fuel Tank
"Leading the Eco-Friendly Ship Market by Complying with Environmental Regulations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering announced on the 31st that it has succeeded for the first time in the world in installing a high-manganese steel LNG fuel tank on a dual-fuel container carrier.
The high-manganese steel LNG tank installed this time is a rectangular-shaped tank mounted inside a 24,000 TEU-class container ship. Unlike the existing LNG cargo hold work during construction, there are difficulties such as coordinating the production schedule due to exposed installation and being affected by external environmental factors like weather, but it has the advantage of being resistant to LNG sloshing occurring during operation and having no restrictions on tank shape.
Recently, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, through over ten years of joint research and development with POSCO, succeeded in developing an LNG fuel tank using cryogenic high-manganese steel, and in October held a naming ceremony for two LNG-powered ultra-large crude carriers, successfully realizing new eco-friendly LNG propulsion technology applied for the first time.
The new material, high-manganese steel, is a material for cargo holds and fuel tanks that withstand liquefied natural gas at cryogenic temperatures of minus 163°C. It is lower in price than existing Invar (nickel alloy steel), aluminum, or stainless steel, and is attracting attention as the next-generation material for LNG cargo holds due to its performance at cryogenic temperatures as well as its high strength and wear resistance.
