Severe Intellectual Disability Worker Faces Wage Arrears and Sexual Assault... Police Launch Investigation
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Police have launched an investigation after circumstances were discovered in which a woman with intellectual disabilities was exploited like a slave, unpaid for her labor, and sexually assaulted at a factory in Busan.
The Busan Police Agency's Women's Crime Investigation Unit announced on the 28th that they are investigating Mr. A, a man in his 70s and the factory manager of a food factory located in Sasang-gu, on charges of raping a disabled person and fraud.
Mr. A is suspected of not paying several million won in wages to Ms. B, a woman in her 30s with severe intellectual disabilities, from 2018 until recently, and of calling her to his home to sexually assault her.
According to the police, Mr. A had Ms. B stay at his home, opened a mobile phone account under her name, and even took out loans amounting to at least tens of millions of won.
Ms. B's intellectual level is said to be equivalent to that of a lower-grade elementary school student. She lived with her father and other family members but started living alone in a one-room apartment after being employed at the factory four years ago.
This case came to light when Ms. B met with her family last September and revealed the abuse she had suffered, prompting her family to report Mr. A to the police.
