SKT "Reducing Plastic with Reusable Cups at University Festivals"
Campaign to Promote Reusable Cups at the '2022 Yeongojeon'
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] SK Telecom, together with Happy Connect, held a reusable cup usage campaign at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, where the ‘2022 Yonkojeon (Korea University vs. Yonsei University baseball game)’ took place, to promote eco-friendly consumption culture among the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z), the company announced on the 28th.
On that day, SKT distributed reusable cups to students participating in the ‘2022 Yonkojeon’ along with Korea University, and when students returned the reusable cups at the event booth after use, they were given snack exchange coupons. The returned cups go through a resource circulation system where they are professionally cleaned by a specialized cleaning company and reused.
SKT has applied or plans to apply reusable cups on university campuses such as Jeju National University, Soongui Women’s College, Korea Polytechnic University, Sogang University, University of Seoul, and Hongik University. Additionally, SKT has conducted reusable cup usage campaigns at on-campus festivals at Ewha Womans University, Konkuk University, and others.
SKT is conducting projects with institutions such as the Ministry of Environment, Seoul City, Incheon City, and Jeju Province, as well as major coffee chains including Starbucks, Twosome Place, The Venti, and Paris Baguette. The company plans to expand to other regions in the future.
The reusable cup project started in Jeju Province in July 2021, followed by a pilot project in Seoul in November 2021, and pilot projects in Incheon and the main project in Seoul in July 2022, resulting in a reduction of approximately 5.2 million disposable cups to date.

Lee Junho, SK Telecom’s ESG Promotion Manager, stated, “We plan to prepare more fun and diverse events so that the MZ generation, who are highly interested in eco-friendly consumption, can take more interest in using reusable cups.”
