National Library of Korea "Need to Support Librarian Capacity Building and Improve Working Conditions"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] In the era of digital transformation, a survey has revealed the need to support capacity building and improve the treatment of librarians to enhance the quality of library services.
According to the "Survey on Job Changes of Librarians Due to Digital Transformation and COVID-19 and Policy Support Measures" conducted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Library of Korea, the increase in non-face-to-face services during the COVID-19 period led to the introduction of new technologies and an increase in new digital content services. It was found that many newly established and provided services will continue to operate in the future.
Furthermore, in a situation of chronic staff shortages, the increase in new non-face-to-face services has caused librarians to feel a significant burden regarding their workload and work intensity.
The study suggested solutions including ▲ the recruitment of librarian personnel to address the expanding role of libraries due to the development of digital information technology and the chronic staff shortages in library settings ▲ improvement of treatment through realistic compensation systems such as guaranteeing educational and training opportunities to enhance the professionalism and capabilities of librarians and increasing librarian allowances ▲ the necessity of active measures to prevent and protect against emotional labor issues experienced by librarians during interactions with library users.
A representative of the National Library of Korea stated, “In an era where the role of libraries is expanding due to the development of digital technology, we hope this study will serve as an opportunity to consider and find efficient ways to improve working conditions and strengthen the professional capabilities of librarians.”
