[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The written exams for the Grade 7 local government official open competitive recruitment and others will be held simultaneously on the 29th at 101 test centers across 17 cities and provinces nationwide.
On the 27th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that a total of 43,826 applicants applied for 1,441 positions in the Grade 7 local government official, research and guidance positions open competitive recruitment (open exam), and career competitive recruitment (career exam) after the application period ended.
By selection target, for Grade 7, 533 positions are to be filled with 34,267 applicants, showing a slight increase from last year with a competition rate of 64.3 to 1. Among the cities and provinces, Seoul had the highest number of positions at 303, while the competition rate was highest in Gyeongnam at 414.0 to 1 and lowest in Jeonnam at 27.1 to 1.
By age group, those aged 20-29 accounted for the largest share at 51.0% (17,742 applicants), followed by those aged 30-39 at 38.4% (13,150 applicants). Among Grade 7 applicants, males made up 42.2% (14,453 applicants) and females 57.8% (19,814 applicants).
Meanwhile, for research and guidance positions, 312 positions are to be filled with 5,593 applicants, resulting in a competition rate of 17.9 to 1, which is a slight increase compared to last year. In other Grade 9 career exams, 596 positions are to be filled with 3,966 applicants, showing an average competition rate of 6.7 to 1.
Meanwhile, examinees who have been notified of COVID-19 infection by health authorities and are in quarantine will take the exam at separate test centers prepared in each city and province (19 locations nationwide). On the exam day, all examinees will undergo a temperature check at the test centers, and those showing COVID-19 symptoms will take the exam in a separately prepared standby exam room.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the 17 cities and provinces are cooperating with health authorities to thoroughly manage pre-exam procedures, including collectively confirming the COVID-19 status of all examinees. The results of the Grade 7 open competitive recruitment and other written exams will be announced on each city and province’s website from November 9 to November 28.

Choi Hoon, Director of the Local Autonomy and Decentralization Office, said, “As the scale of COVID-19 infections remains a concern, we will work closely with the 17 cities and provinces to ensure examinees can safely take the exam,” and urged, “Examinees should also strictly follow quarantine rules such as wearing masks inside the test centers.”
