Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Operates 'Commemoration Week' for the 93rd Student Independence Movement Anniversary
From October 31 to November 4
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education will operate a Student Independence Movement Commemoration Week for all affiliated institutions and schools in the district, along with various events to inherit and promote the spirit of the Student Independence Movement, on November 3rd, the 93rd anniversary of the Student Independence Movement Memorial Day.
The Office of Education announced on the 26th that it will operate the Independence Movement Commemoration Week from October 31st to November 4th.
During this period, individual schools will autonomously conduct commemorative events suitable to their circumstances, such as ▲special lessons linked to the curriculum ▲student independence movement commemorative activities led by student councils ▲posting banners.
To support the operation of the commemoration week in individual schools, the Office of Education plans and operates various programs including ▲student independence movement history education visiting schools ▲one-day student independence movement reporter experience ▲guidance on student independence movement teaching materials.
The student independence movement history education visiting schools will be conducted for about 120 classes in connection with the Student Independence Movement History Academy, a professional interpreter training course operated by the Student Independence Movement Commemoration Association.
The one-day student independence movement reporter experience targets about 120 elementary and middle school students in the district, allowing students to directly cover student independence movement historic sites and write newspaper articles.
Through this, the experience program is operated so that students can independently discover and understand the historical significance and noble spirit of the Student Independence Movement.
On November 5th, the ‘Gwangju Youth Independence Festival,’ which had been held online due to COVID-19, will be held in person.
The event is expected to open with a reenactment of the street protests and independence movement by students during the Gwangju Student Independence Movement at the May 18 Democratic Square. This event will feature a variety of programs led by students, including exhibitions, youth social participation presentations, and youth busking.
Since the 90th anniversary of the Student Independence Movement Memorial Day, a nationwide training program for teachers to inherit the spirit of the Student Independence Movement has been conducted as part of the nationalization project of the Student Independence Movement. This year, it will be held for officials in charge at metropolitan and provincial offices of education from November 23rd to 24th to spread the spirit of the Student Independence Movement nationwide.
Additionally, the Office of Education staff will also participate in the Student Independence Movement Day commemoration. Superintendent Lee Jeongseon and senior officials will visit and pay respects at four schools with Student Independence Movement Memorial Towers (Monuments).
Other staff members will watch the Student Independence Movement Memorial Ceremony broadcast together in their offices.
