'KakaoTalk Outage Incident' National Assembly Hearing Witness Choi Tae-won Submits Absence Letter
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Sung-pil] Choi Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, who was selected as a witness for the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee's audit regarding the KakaoTalk outage caused by the SK C&C Pangyo Data Center fire, has submitted a letter explaining his absence from the audit.
According to the National Assembly on the 22nd, Chairman Choi submitted the letter of absence to the committee around 11 p.m. the previous night. In the four-page letter, he mentioned that the "Japan Forum," which he personally planned, was held on the same day, and stated, "Please understand that I am unable to attend due to unavoidable reasons." SK Group has been preparing the forum since August to rebuild Korea-Japan private economic cooperation and respond to the global supply chain crisis.
Chairman Choi also said, "I am in charge of overseeing the competitive presentation (PT) at the 3rd General Assembly of the International Exhibitions Bureau to be held in France next month," adding, "The organizing committee has serious concerns about my attendance as a witness at the audit in light of the important competitive PT ahead." He further added, "In the intense competition to host the 2030 Busan Expo, if provocative and negative articles are produced regarding my attendance as a witness, it could affect the effectiveness and credibility of the competitive PT."

The ruling and opposition parties plan to review whether Chairman Choi's reason for absence is valid. However, since it is not a personal issue, it seems likely that his absence will be accepted. Previously, the committee selected Chairman Choi as a witness for the comprehensive audit of the Ministry of Science and ICT scheduled for the 24th to hold him accountable for the management responsibility of the SK C&C Pangyo Data Center fire that caused the KakaoTalk outage.
