P&OChemical Co., Ltd. Completes Construction of 50,000 Ton Annual Hydrogen Peroxide Plant in Gwangyang
Production of High-Purity Hydrogen Peroxide, an Essential Material for Semiconductor and Display Manufacturing Processes
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City, Jeonnam announced that on the 20th, it held a completion ceremony at the Gwangyang National Industrial Complex attended by Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa, OCI President Kim Taek-jung, POSCO Chemical President Min Kyung-jun, and P&OChemical President Kim Jong-guk for the joint venture P&OChemical Co., Ltd., established by OCI and POSCO Chemical.
The hydrogen peroxide plant, the first outcome of the joint venture, was established on a 42,000㎡ site within the Gwangyang National Industrial Complex with an investment of 145.9 billion KRW.
The production capacity is 50,000 tons per year, of which 30,000 tons are high-purity hydrogen peroxide used in semiconductor and display manufacturing processes.
Hydrogen peroxide is a representative oxidizer mainly used as a disinfectant or bleaching agent raw material, and especially high-purity hydrogen peroxide is utilized in the cleaning stages of advanced manufacturing fields such as semiconductors and displays.
The Gwangyang hydrogen peroxide plant is the first in Korea to produce products by recycling coke oven gas. It receives coke oven gas generated from the steelmaking process at POSCO Gwangyang Steelworks, selectively refines and extracts only hydrogen for use in the production process, and the coke oven gas after hydrogen extraction is supplied back to the steelworks to be reused as a heat source.
The coke oven gas extraction method is eco-friendly, reducing carbon emissions by about 29% compared to conventional production methods using natural gas or naphtha.
Gwangyang Mayor Jeong In-hwa said, “I sincerely congratulate the completion ceremony of P&OChemical Co., Ltd.'s hydrogen peroxide plant together with 150,000 Gwangyang citizens,” and added, “Following the plant completion, we will do our best to provide administrative support so that not only future core projects but also various high-quality businesses can actively invest continuously in Gwangyang City.”
