Gwangju Seo-gu Council Passes Resolution Urging Resident Consultation for Water Quality Improvement of Pungam Lake
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Seo-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Chairperson Go Kyung-ae) announced on the 19th that it passed the "Resolution Urging Water Quality Improvement of Pungam Lake through Consultation with Residents," proposed by Councilor Baek Jong-han, at the 1st plenary session of the 307th extraordinary meeting.
Councilor Baek pointed out, "The water quality improvement plan by Bitgoeul Central Park Development Co., Ltd., which involves landfill of the bottom of Pungam Lake to reduce the storage capacity from 450,000 tons as an agricultural reservoir to 160,000 tons for a scenic lake park, has not been reliably verified for effectiveness, and the extensive citizen opinion collection process and environmental assessments were omitted."
He continued, "If the lake bottom is artificially raised to eliminate the green algae that appear temporarily in summer, there is concern about the possibility of unforeseen disasters such as flooding during heavy rains and wetland formation. We ask that a verified water quality improvement plan for Pungam Lake be presented, fully reflecting the residents' opinions who wish to preserve the original form."
